The Roadtrip.

While I was completing an internship with the Mississauga Arts Council, I was referred to an article in the Globe & Mail that focused on the consistent struggles faced by many charities and not-for-profit organizations in Canada and their uncertain futures. This led me to think about my own future. As someone who has been openly passionate about not-for-profit organizations, the mention of 'uncertain futures' and the 'lack of sustainability' within them is of major concern to me. After volunteering, interning and working with various not-for-profits, I know all too well the struggles that many face to 'keep the dream alive'. The never-ending search for funding, the lack of helping hands (& employees), the days that are never long enough, the constant combat for exposure, and that gloomy feeling one believer gets when they don't receive the encouragement and feedback they need to blossom. It can be tough, and often trying work - but if it doesn't get done by them, it won't get done at all.

There are so many NFP organizations in Canada who are doing incredible, important, and inspiring work. I think it is absolutely vital that they have the ability to continue to do so, but how? How can I positively affect their circumstances? How can I ensure that their work doesn't go unnoticed? How can I inspire other great people in this great country to open their hearts and offer their time, talents and support? All of these questions led me to my idea for a Roadtrip with Reason.

I want to spend approximately 3 months driving across Canada. I will explore the idea of volunteerism by offering my helping hands for a few days of my time with a variety of NFP's in each and every province and territory. For every NFP that I share some time with, I will create a web video featuring their organization, which will be posted on this website and exposed via various social media outlets.

I see this as an opportunity to expose, inspire, open eyes, affect positive change and showcase Canada.

Expose
Every Friday while on the RwR, I will post a not-for-profit feature video that will share the efforts of that weeks' organization. Each video will focus on who they are, what they do, why they do it and why as Canadians we should care! I will introduce you to the brains & hearts behind the organization, include some footage of my experience with them, and create something that will (hopefully) be worth sharing!

Open Eyes
There are so many different not-for-profits fighting for various important causes that many (including myself) are not aware of. I want to spend my time with every kind of organization and open eyes (yours and mine) to the struggles Canadians face in this country every day. By informing my viewers, I hope to ignite passion within them to get involved.

Affect Positive Change
I want to use my idea as a source of inspiration for people, young and old, all over Canada. By having my viewers take part in this exciting journey, I hope to be able to encourage some to do their part and show some heart by supporting a NFP of their choice. I want to spread the idea that support does not always equal money - NFP's could use time and talent as well. Are you a web designer? Have experience in planning events? Another specialized skill? Sharing your unique abilities with a NFP for just a few hours each week could make such a positive difference within any organization.

Showcase Canada
I love this country and am very proud to call it my home. It has been a dream of mine to spend a significant amount of time travelling across Canada and basking in its glory. Taking this roadtrip will not only allow me to spend time with the beautiful people that make up this country, but it will also allow me to document the beauty of the country itself. If you are not able to physically spend some time with me on the road, I still want to be involve you in every part of the journey. By creating a 'Tourist Tuesday' web video feature, I will have the opportunity to share the incredible, peaceful and unique sights and sounds that make up Canada, with you.
