Volunteer Video: For the Love of Learning (St. John's, NL)

You have no idea how great it feels to be posting this video (below) up. It has been a long, overwhelming and frustrating process to rifle through but the first non-profit profile video is finally complete. The most important thing to note is that For the Love of Learning is a fantastic, worthy and change-making organization in St. John's. Although I arrived during an unusual week - I was still able to grasp the importance of their programming and see the pride and dedication everyone had for the organization. I was particularly impressed with the extremely open and welcoming environment - it didn't matter if you are a University grad, a person struggling with homelessness or a University grad who is homeless.

Some may not understand how art, theatre and creative writing helps at-risk youth, but I can assure you that this program and similar programs do. After meeting some participants, hearing some stories and reading some of the work that was created in the space - there is no doubt in my mind that FTLOL is an organization who is doing great work in St. John's. "A lot with a little" as Peter (in the video) said - I couldn't agree more.

It was a fantastic first organization for the roadtrip. I left feeling grateful, inspired and excited - my brain was swimming with potential workshop ideas and ways to get involved. Perhaps it's time for me to move to St. John's .... heh!

If you have some extra change in your pocket or artistic skills to share as a volunteer, I highly suggest you
get in touch with For the Love of Learning. Enjoy! xo

P.S.  After many years of renting the Gower United church gym for multiple years (although they are a non-religious org), FTLOL are in the process of seeking a new space in the St. John's area. If you have any rental tips or opportunities to help find the organization a new home, please get in touch!

I finally have a video to share with you. FINALLY! I cannot begin to explain the frustration level that was reached during the editing of this - so many complications. Far too many! It's still not perfect but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and move on, which is exactly what I am doing.

All you really need to know is that Newfoundland was spectacular. Enjoy! xo

Hi Friends,

I am officially back in Nova Scotia after an amazing last few days in Newfoundland. I am so, so sad to leave that magical province behind, but excited to see what Nova Scotia has to offer! Volunteering with For the Love of Learning was a great experience and I am excited to share it with you in video form on Friday!

I also had a great time exploring the city of St. John's. One of my last few evenings was spent getting 'Screeched In' with Mayo, my couchsurfing host, and some other surfers. It was an awesome night and I am glad to now have a certificate that says I am an "Honourary Newfie"! Check it out :)

Random Act Wednesday: Week 3

8/3/2011

Hi Friends,

Happy Wednesday! I am currently hanging out in St. John's, Newfoundland. Today is their Regatta day (a holiday) so I have taken the day off volunteering and am going to explore...but of course today is a day for kindness, too!

Last week(ends) card was #23 - "The next time you tip someone, be overly generous. It'll make their day"- which was a fun one to complete. I left a little note & tip of thanks at the Jumping Bean Cafe here in St. John's! I also got some cute stories sent to me, including one from John & Arlene (the winners of this week) who left a tip for their server Coady at an Italian restaurant in Maple, Ontario. He did a cartwheel!!! Hahaha. Made me smile! My folks also took part and did the random act at the Sunnyside Grill in Oakville, one of their favourite spots. Check out the photos....
This week I blindly chose #11 out of the Boom Boom Cards pouch:
"Write a knock-knock or silly joke on a sticky note and put it on a co-workers desk, or as a bookmark in a book, on someone's front door, etc"

I love it! It's easy, cost effective and who doesn't love to make people laugh?! I will definitely be taking advantage of this today, and you should too!!

As always, if you tell me about your random act of kindness experience on my facebook page, twitter (#randomactwed), this blog, or through e-mail - you can win a little gift of thanks from Roadtrip with Reason for being kind!  Don't forget to also input it on www.boomboomcards.com (the tracking # is UABPG8Q) so that we can see the location of these acts on the map.

That's it from me! Happy, happy Wednesday.

Go be kind.....and funny!

Warmly,
Becky xo

Random Act Weekend?

entering the park.
Hi Friends,

Happy Friday! I am currently set-up in Gander, NL. I spent the last 3 days basking in the glory of Gros Morne National Park. It is a magical part of Canada that was tough to leave. The only downside about camping at the national park was the lack of reliable internet, which forced me to miss Random Act Wednesday.

I have finally found a spot that has slightly better access, so I wanted to get this post up! It's officially Random Act Weekend! That's right, you have from now until Sunday at 11:59 p.m. to complete the following random act of kindness, and tell me all about it!

This week I blindly chose #23 out of the Boom Boom Cards pouch.

"The next time you tip someone, be overly generous. It'll make their day"

My thoughts on the card:

1. If you don't plan on going out to a restaurant over the weekend, that's okay! Consider tipping the person gave you your morning coffee at Tim's, sold you a pack of gum at the convenience store or did your dry cleaning. I am pretty easy going about this!

2. Not everyone is able to be overly generous financially. Not to worry! You can be equally as kind by providing someone with a little note of thanks for their service, or a little homemade gift etc.

So, that's it! Don't forget to tell me about your random act experience by visiting my Facebook page, Twitter (#randomactwed), this blog or through e-mail - pictures and videos are welcome and encouraged! You can also post up your experience on www.boomboomcards.com and register the card (tracking number is Q6 D2 HMV) which then shows the location of kindness on the map. Very cool!

Just like before, you can win a prize from Roadtrip with Reason for being kind! Next Wednesday I will announce the winner of Random Act Weekend: Week 2. Speaking of a winner..... CONGRATS to Sara Farnell for winning week 1!! You can expect a little something from Newfoundland :)

That's all, folks! Have the happiest of weekends. Off to be kind, I go....

Warmly,
Becky xo

Top 5 things I've learned.

7/22/2011

Hey Friends!

I have now officially been on the road FOREVER - 5 whole days!!
Justtttt kidding. I can't believe it's only been 5 days - I feel like the "road life" has been my reality for 5 months (in a good way).

I wanted to share with you the Top 5 things I've learned thus far...

1. Tim Hortons' coffee loses it's charm after multiple cups. Blasphemy, you say? Just try it!

2. XM Radio is awesome (Thanks for the hook-up, Chevrolet!) - I am especially loving the comedy stations. Pretty sure everyone who drives past me thinks I am a little loopy, but I can't help but LAUGH OUT LOUD every.single.time.

3. My terrible sense of direction isn't getting any better. Sometimes even OnStar (the human GPS, as I lovingly refer to them) struggles to save me. In fact, I just returned "home" from another LOST adventure and missed out on ice cream with Blair & Stef from the Empathy Factory. Huge bummer. Instead, I drove on the highway (heading to P.E.I?!) at 12 a.m. So yeah, I guess I learned that it's not TOO scary driving through moose country at night. Actually, I am starting to think the whole moose phenomenon is a big eastern conspiracy. There are a billion warning signs, but where are the moose?!

4. New Brunswick is beautiful and Fredericton is a great city. Who knew?! I didn't. It was a pleasant surprise!

5. There are SO many people doing cool Canadian tours! I have come across 3 different projects, including a group doing a documentary on family farming - they had a TRACTOR pulling a mini-house/trailer/thing....it was the coolest! I also had a chance to meet Scott, Meghan & Sabrina from Run to Live - 42K a day....unbelievable! Man, Canadians are cool.
I am so proud to call this country my home!

Ta-da! I bet by the end of my 4-month journey I will have have a Top 1004493902394394034 things I have learned list...... Hah!

Heading to Newfoundland via ferry on Sunday! Project begins on August 1st! Life is good!

Happy trails & travels.

LOVE,
Becky xo

Tune-eee Tuesday: Week 7

3/9/2011

Hi Music Lovers!

So it's time for another weekly post of tunes for the road! As you're aware, I am compiling a grande list of songs for my Roadtrip with Reason ... this week I am focusing on artists from Newfoundland. I have decided to spend the next few (13) weeks posting music from a particular province or territory. So next week the music will be from Nova Scotia, and the following week the tunes will come from Prince Edward Island. Do you comprehend? Hope so!

I spent multiple hours skimming through artists on CBC Radio 3's BIG LIST to find (most of) my picks this week. My obsession with Radio 3 has finally come in handy! Huzzah.

1) The Mountains & The Trees -- More & More & More
2) Hey Rosetta! -- Yer Spring
3) Matthew Hornell & The Diamond Minds -- Red Crescent
4) Great Big Sea -- When I'm Up (I can't get down)
Note: How could I not include this classic?!
5) Colleen Power -- Newfoundland Weather
Note: I thought this was SO funny. After watching it about 10 times in a row I am now familiar with all the lyrics. Hilarious.
That's all for now! Leave me a comment if you know of any awesome musicians from Newfoundland....I would be happy to add them to my list.

Don't forget to keep on voting in the Pepsi Refresh Canada contest. You're the best!

Happy trails & travels,
-- Becky :)
